Open Final match report by Wayne Smith

The final was played on a pitch flooded with direct sunlight. It severely hampered play as the bright light was hard on the eyes. Neither finalist found the net in the first half, but Wayne’s keeper made two saves in the first 90 seconds and Wayne forced a corner before the 2nd minute was over. The bright light was killer and made it tough to focus on the ball. Steve finally broke through with just less than 10 minutes left in the game and the partisan crowd went nuts. The goal was terrific, requiring the playing of several moving balls and the hitting of the rolling ball in for a 1:0 lead. How he did it in those lighting conditions was beyond his opponent. Steve then reverted to 9 fig’s back and if Wayne was going to fight his way back, Steve was going to make it really tough on him. Steve was up 1:0. It was with six minutes left when Wayne finally broke through. It was an arcing shot from the left wing off the far post and in. Wayne really took over at this point and poured on more pressure. With about 3 minutes left Wayne was given a back on the left wing inside Steve’s shooting zone. He touched up, which allowed Steve to get a figure between the ball and the goal. Wayne ramped the shot over the Arsenal keeper and in. Wayne took the lead with about 2:30 left. The crowd went dead silent. Now it was Wayne’s turn to play defense, but, in true Werder Bremen tradition, he refused, still pushing figures up the field to try to increase the lead. Steve tried frantically to get the ball up the field as fast as possible, but the Werder figures got back in time to shut down Steve’s offense as time ran out. Wayne squeaked out a 2:1 victory. This was a far cry from Wayne’s 5:1 win against Steve just a few hours earlier on the same pitch.

Everyone had a great time and it seemed as this is a good launching point for the SCSC. We had 10 players for the tournament-five of whom had never played in an ASA tournament! With the addition of Jay and Gunner as possible regulars, it looks like we will continue to be a reasonably strong group.
