The tournament was held to honor SCSC member Ric Rivas who will be leaving to emigrate to Singapore on September 29. Five other players turned out to participate in this tournament, and there were equal numbers of experienced and newcomer players. This event was also the First round of the Maricopa Cup, and the Maricopa Newcomer rules were used for first time.
The winner was not decided until the final game between Steve Tucker and Ric Rivas, the pressure was on Ric as if his opponent won or the game ended in a draw Steve would finish at the top of the table. The game ended 1-0 in Steve's favor and he was declared the winner of the tournament. Dominic Hutchinson won his first game, and won the Newcomer competition.
The consensus amongst both the newcomers and experienced players was that the Maricopa Newcomer rules had worked. It had given the newcomers an opportunity to gain valuable match experience.
