Report

Tonight we welcomed Munir Merchant as he was introduced to Subbuteo. His first two games were very slow as his opponent spent time to describe the rules, tactics, and suggest moves.

For his third game Merchant played Adam Carlson, using Maricopa Vase rules. This was the first time Carlson, who normally plays others using Vase rules, had played against an opponent using these rules and he learned how frustrating and disruptive it is to the fluidity of your game to have to pause to wait for your opponent’s flick.

Steve Tucker faced Wayne Smith for his first game since August. It was no surprise that Smith was triumphant 4-0. “Despite Steve’s layoff his flicks are still outstanding,” Smith reported after the game.

A goal in either half saw Dominic Hutchinson beat Carlson. “It was a well struck shot that he [Adam] did not expected,” was how the victor described his first goal. The second was an own goal from a ‘scoff’ corner, which is when the corner is shot to try and strike the goalkeeper and bounce into the goal. Dominic’s corner did not cross goal line, but as Carlson flapped to try & clear it he knocked the ball back into the goal with his goalkeeper. “I did not expect to score a goal like that,” Adam lamented. “It was very unfortunate.”

Tucker bounced back from his loss to Smith to beat Carlson 3-0. “Adam played a good defense in midfield, but panicked in defense,” was how Steve described his opponent’s play, “otherwise it was a good match.”

“It was a tough game, as I assaulted the goal to no avail,” was how Tucker characterized his 2-0 win over Dominic. “His defense was excellent and he is much improved since the last time I played him.”

“It was a lot of fun,” was how Merchant described his first night of Subbuteo, “but I know people are playing at a slower pace.”
